Prepare the Ground
Mark the area, excavate to required depth, then install and compact a solid sub-base (MOT Type 1 or similar).
Level & protect
Apply a thin leveling layer of sharp sand and lay weed membrane.
Install grids
Place and connect the grid panels evenly across the prepared surface.
Fill with gravel
Fill cells with angular gravel and level slightly above the grid.

The smaller of the two plum mauve coloured slates. Quarried in Wales this is an environmentally friendly product made from the slate left over after roofing tile production. The 20mm grade is the more popular of the two sizes for paths and drives. Like the blue version these chippings tend to bed down and lay flat making them ideal for walking on. It also looks great when used in rockeries, ponds, water features, screes, borders and decorative landscaping. As a mulch it is effective as helps retain moisture in planting areas and is a good weed suppressor but should still be used with weed prevention membrane. It provides a stylish look to any garden and is very striking when wet. Slate is a natural product so be aware that your order may contain the odd random blue or green pieces. Sometimes even one piece may be multiple colours. The approximate length of the chippings ranges between 10-30mm. The recommended depth for laying is roughly 30-40mm. Also available...
