Estimating Gravel Needed
The volume calculator provides an estimate of the amount of aggregate needed for your project. The quantities suggested are intended as a guide and can be affected by the type and size of the product. The depth you enter into the volume calculator depends on the intended purpose of your project. Recommended laying depths are shown in the product’s description. Garden borders and features don’t need laying as deep as areas that will be walked or driven on. However, it is possible to lay a driveway too deep making it harder to drive on. That’s the reason gravel pits are sometimes used on steep downhill roads as an escape lane. As a general rule of thumb borders should be around 3-4cm and drives and paths 4-5cm. It’s always easier to order some more aggregates if you under estimate. If you were to order too much the cost for you returning any surplus would be expensive.
To make things easier for you estimating the amount of aggregates required there are 4 different shapes to choose from. The volume calculator can estimate areas that are rectangles, triangles, circles and semi-circles. If the area you want to cover isn’t one of these shapes you can still get an estimate by combining one or more shapes. We have come up with 3 examples below to show how you can get an estimate for more complex area shapes using the volume calculator.
-
Bed Example
This example can be split into 3 shapes. 2 semi-circles and a rectangular shape, but it can be simplified to just a circle and a rectangle.
-
Path Example
This example can be split into 5 rectangular shapes.
-
Driveway Example
This example can be split into 3 triangular shapes. You can use string to section the different parts to make measuring easier.
